In particular, robust enforcement of our nation\u2019s fair housing and lending laws is critically important at this time, especially as DOJ\u2019s Combating Redlining Initiative has recently reached over $100 million in settlements with a range of financial institutions including credit unions and non-depository institutions. Currently, the people of America are facing a fair and affordable housing crisis, with record-high housing costs, increased homelessness, and a record number of housing discrimination <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/url.us.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/AJCaCo29PmH6qonczhQSpVrj_\">complaints<\/a>. By using the nation\u2019s civil rights laws to eliminate the distortions that bias inflicts upon the markets, the DOJ can ensure the markets operate fairly and efficiently to build a world where a person\u2019s zip code does not determine their outcome in life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-wrap-item post__paragraph\">In the letter, NFHA recommends that the Senate ensure that the next Attorney General shows a demonstrated commitment to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"content-wrap-item post__list post__list-undefined wp-block-list\" value=\"\">\n<li>Preserving checks and balances, including by showing an independent legal judgment to uphold the nation\u2019s laws;\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protecting the established rights and freedoms through robust enforcement of our nation\u2019s longstanding civil rights laws, including the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act;\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting fair and affordable housing for all households and communities, including continuing the DOJ\u2019s critical work to combat housing discrimination, redlining, and appraisal discrimination so that all households and communities can realize the American dream of homeownership as well as stable, affordable housing; and\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting robust civil rights protections for housing-related automated systems, including artificial intelligence (AI).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-wrap-item post__paragraph\">The full text of NFHA\u2019s letter to the Senate can be found <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/url.us.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/c1WDCn5VPlhrOyEh9fVSJA4c3\">here<\/a>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-wrap-item post__paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-wrap-item post__paragraph\"><strong>About the National Fair Housing Alliance<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-wrap-item post__paragraph\">The National Fair Housing Alliance\u00ae (NFHA\u2122) is the country\u2019s only national civil rights organization dedicated solely to eliminating all forms of housing and lending discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for all people.
